Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best things about London is its green spaces!
From city centre ambles along the Thames Path to deer watching in Richmond Park, there are so many different walks to get you outside this weekend.
Here are five of my faves…
East Thames Path
Start point: Canary Wharf | End point: Tower Hill | Distance: 2.9mi / 4.6km
Transport yourself back in time with one of my absolute favourite routes — The Thames Path’s section along the northeast stretch of the river. Starting in Canary Wharf, wander through the eerily empty office buildings headed towards the cobbled streets of Limehouse through to Rotherhithe concluding at the famous landmarks, Tower Bridge and The Tower of London. Break up your amble with a refreshment at The Prospect of Whitney, one of the oldest pubs in London which overlooks the banks of the Thames and still has a noose used for hangings out the back — Or the Grapes of Wrath, Sir Ian Mckellin’s Pub which is home to Gandalfs stick!
Regents Canal
Start: Victoria Park, E3 | End: Kings Cross - Coal Drops Yard | Distance: 3.6mi / 5.7km
A classic London walk - You can’t go wrong with a walk East to West or vice versa along the famous canal’s towpath. It cuts through some of the most popular areas in London, including London Fields, Islington, Camden and King’s Cross. Depending on how ambitious you’re feeling you can make this one considerably longer, continuing past Regent’s Park towards Little Venice. Spot the famous Hackney sharks, stop at waterside side coffee shops or restaurants like Tow Path or Canal No 5 and enjoy the largely car-free route.
The Parkland Walk
Start: Finsbury Park | End: Alexandar Palace Park | Distance: 3.9mi / 6.4km
Another stellar route is the parkland walk connecting Finsbury Park with Ally Pally. With this, you have two options, walk downhill or trek up. One of the major draws to this route is the viewpoint from Alexandar Palace, so if you can I’d recommend finishing there. The majority of the route takes place on the Parkland Walk route, a green belt which used to be a railway line. You’ll notice the abandoned train platforms and tunnels which nod to its industrial past and keep an eye out for the Spriggan fairy!
Richmond Park
Start & End: Richmond Park | Distance: 7.3mi / 11.7km
Escape the city with a day of ambling through Richmond Park, the city’s largest park which covers almost 2,500 acres. Join the Tamsin Trail which winds the entire perimeter of the park and spot the herds of deer that live here year-round. The park’s history is linked to these animals as it was created by Charles I in the 17th century as a hunting ground.
Greenwich Naval College
Start & End: Cutty Sark | Distance: Optional
One of my favourite viewpoints in London can be found in Greenwich Park in South East London. Start at Cutty Sark, a restored British tea clipper and attached museum, then head east through the old Naval College. You’ll likely recognise the buildings of the college from a whole host of movies and TV shows, including Les Mis, The Crown, Bridgerton and most recently Wicked! Afterwards, tackle the steep incline of Greenwich Park up towards the observatory and Prime Meridian.
Let me know your fave London walk!
